Who We Are

Angel of Edgewood is a Hartford based grassroots nonprofit that responds to urgent, real time crises facing individuals and families across Greater Hartford. We exist because too many people fall through the cracks of systems that are slow, restrictive, and disconnected from lived reality. Our work is rooted in trust, dignity, and action. We do not wait for people to reach a breaking point. We step in early, close gaps, and stabilize households so families can move forward rather than fall further behind.

Our impact is made possible through strong partnerships, including the support of Greater Hartford Gives Foundation (formerly Hartford Foundation for Public Giving), the State of Connecticut, the Federal Government, corporations, and private donors whose investment in small grassroots organizations like Angel of Edgewood reflects a belief in community led solutions that deliver real results. That trust allows us to respond with urgency, flexibility, and compassion when it matters most.

Meet Our Founder and CEO

Jendayi Scott Miller is the visionary force behind Angel of Edgewood. What began as cooking meals in her own kitchen during the COVID 19 pandemic to ensure seniors did not go hungry has grown into one of Greater Hartford’s most impactful community organizations.

Jendayi organized more than seventy volunteers, delivered food across the region, and built a movement rooted in compassion and action. Under her leadership, Angel of Edgewood acquired a seventeen thousand square foot facility and is building out a Community Café and Resource Center that will soon serve as a hub for hot meals, wraparound services, and community programs.

Despite break ins, stolen supplies, and constant demand for basic needs, Jendayi has never wavered. Her leadership is grounded in courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to community.

She has been recognized as one of Hartford Business Journal’s Top 25 Women in Business, a Camp Courant Buddy Bash Award recipient, and honored by numerous community and state leaders. Through every challenge, her mission remains clear. No child, elder, veteran. or neighbor goes hungry on her watch.

Our Tax-Exempt Status and What It Means

Angel of Edgewood is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is further classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a 509(a)(2) public charity. This distinction is important because it reflects not only our legal status, but also how we operate, how we are funded, and how deeply rooted we are in the community we serve.

A 501(c)(3) designation confirms that Angel of Edgewood exists exclusively for charitable purposes and that all donations made to the organization are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. It affirms our commitment to serving the public good, operating transparently, and reinvesting every dollar back into programs and services that benefit individuals and families across Greater Hartford.

Our 509(a)(2) classification goes a step further. It confirms that Angel of Edgewood is a public charity, not a private foundation, and that we receive broad support from the community through a combination of individual donors, program related revenue, grants, and public funding. This classification demonstrates that our work is sustained by community trust, active service delivery, and diversified funding, rather than reliance on a single donor or funding source.

As a 509(a)(2) organization, Angel of Edgewood is required to meet ongoing public support tests, ensuring financial accountability, transparency, and long-term sustainability. This status reflects who we are at our core: grassroots, community-driven organization that delivers direct services, responds in real time to urgent needs, and remains accountable to the people we serve.

Being a 509(a)(2) public charity allows Angel of Edgewood to remain flexible, responsive, and deeply connected to the community. It reinforces our ability to meet people where they are, adapt to emerging challenges, and create meaningful impact without unnecessary bureaucracy. This structure strengthens our mission, our credibility, and our ability to serve Greater Hartford with integrity and compassion.
